A: Hygrometer gives moisture in the air ( relative humidity). It has a wet and dry bulb thermometer. In holds we use whirling hygrometer so to as good flow of air.100% humidity is rain, so can not open ventilation.

A: For a reversible engine we need 12 and for non reversible engine 6 consecutive starts. Requirement not sure but I think its a class requirement.

A: If will be difficult if:-1. Markets are down in shipping business.Shipping business follows wave graph. Up and down markets scenario effects shipping intake. When business is running low companies avoid taking new apprentices.2. If degree was done without company sponsorship. It will easy when:-1. Degree is done after getting sponsorship from a company.2. Market scenario is good.

A: I think it is called black sea due to no growth of microorganisms making it look black. The reson for inhospitable enviornment for growth is lack of oxygen in the lower layers of sea is due to minimal water movement between top and lower layers.

A: If there is no cargo shift or ballast water transfer or fuel transfer still vessel list to one side that means angle of loll. Better to check stability computer , if GM neutral that means angle of loll. In normal list GM is positive.   Ballast or press up tanks on listed side to correct it OR remove cause of it, that is one which is raising centre of gravity.

A: Who so ever is the operator of vessel owner or time charterers. Rescue is compulsory if asked by RCC.

A: Not good holding - loose sand, gravel , shells, weed/sea grasse or rocky bottom. Important is to get local information on any anchoring ground and previous history.

A: Air draft - Distance from water line to part of ship that is being considered, usually the highest point. 1. In case of crossing under bridges/wire cables etc - air draft is taken utpo highest point of vessel that is usually the main mast top of bridge. 2. In case of loading - air draft used is the top of hatch coaming (for bulk carriers). For orals or exams - say distance from waterline to the highest point on vessel.

A: First is avoid last minute action. Second is action will depend upon type of situation and conditions. Open sea give hard a starboard and use engine as needed.

A: Personnel choice. Water should be clean and deep enough so that propeller wash should not generate sediments or mud from bottom. And of course engine on RFA and outside territorial water 12 nm. I use to start after 50 meters contour if above comply, open sea and apparently clean water.

A: It will depend upon windlass capacity. The power it has. The manual/drawing will given wait of chain plus anchor. With that we need to calculate how much hanging wait (of anchor plus cable )windlass can lift. Also make allowance to be made for the break force required to take anchor out of embedment in sea bottom. Usually thet yard engineer can give all that caluclations. For handy max bulker its usually 4 shackles hanging windlass can lift plus after allowance for pull force needed to break anchor from sea bottom its usually 80 mtrs maximum.   But we should get ship specific information and company policy also. Some companies SMS gives clear instruction for their ship types.

A: To add  OCIMF guide “International Safety Guide for Oil Tankers and Terminals” (ISGOTT) has been so good that IMO never felt need for tanker code.

A: Vessel at anchor is not under command. So normal lights for anchor. If she drags anchor then normal NUC lights.

A: Its a brand. Having ISO certified means good quality. So company will get more business.

A: You need to give details , how many months your contract, did it had plus , minus e.g 5 months plus minus one.  When you signed off. But I suggest in present market scenario better to get job back on another company vessel and avoid all this.

A: Can I ask  one question - why it is required, I mean how this question came up.

A: Why it is needed. And how did this question orginated.

A: Not to impede Passage means not to come to a situation where risk of collosions arises and never to imepde passage; its like always the give away vessel. Fishing vessels are not supposed to fish in the traffic lanes and if they do they are always give away vessel While for safe paaasage;  eg vessel less then 20 mtrs in the TSS  when coming from inshore traffic zone and situation comes where she is a stand on vessel in a crossing siutation with other power driven vessel like loaded VLCC and if it takes action that will land him in danger then sailing vessel should give safe passage to tanker or not to impede safe passage. Hope I am correct.

A: If you joining a ship then you must be having its name/ship particulars. From that find out other data from web like history, cassification society and previous names if any. If classed by recoganized classification society then that will be safe. We can have n number of other things to check and many exception but basically ship in class is safe.

A: If by drop means let go then never. If planning by walking back then as mentioned in other reply check windlass capacity. Newer bigger ships might have that capacity.

A: In gravity dock by stern first, mean stern will go in first and in floating dry dock any side first. The floating dry can ballast/deballast to have same trim as vessel so that vessel rest fully.

A: Fire should ring until and unless accepted and then reset. And 30 mins on emergency source.

A: I have not seen hatch so far marked with ship's name. Only letter H for helicopter to know the hatch he can land. Details of marking as per ICS guide for helicopter landing. Any helicopter landing on ship can see its name from other places. Its written in aft, on both sides of bow and both sides of bridge wings. I dont see a need to be marked on hatch cover.

A: Water tight door - They are designed to take the pressure of the head of water they are designed for. If ballast tank has a door at the lower end and water fills upto 15 mtrs in tank then  that door should be able to hold that water pressure, infact from from any side. Any compartment having water tight door then water should not leak out or enter in. Wheather tight door -- They should not allow water to enter in the compartment in any weather condition so means from from outisde (one direction). Like hatch covers will not allow water to go in the cargo hold from outside in any weather condition. Or like accomodation weather tight doors. But weather tight door will not take the pressure of the water. That means if in above condition we had weather tight door then at 15 mtrs it will leak or give away. Main to remember is Water tight - both sides and can take presure head. Weather tight one side and not design to take pressure of water.

A: Which kind of vessel you looking for?   Usually you maximum deballsting rate is you rmaximum loading rate on bulk carriers.

A: Master has to keep all in the loop. So I think we should make difference in keeping all informed and taking permission. Medical advise no need permission. Diversion of vessel is owners/master's call based on safety aspect. Charterers need to be well informed about decesion and course of action.

A: It is the cargo quantity determined before final two pours to see how much cargo is left for loading and how it will be distributed in order to have desired trim and/or drafts.
